The Right Way to Jack a Tesla — Why Jack Pucks Matter
Under a gas car, there's a steel floor pan and frame rails that shrug off a misplaced jack. Under your Tesla, there's a battery. Lift it in the wrong spot and you can turn a $60 tire rotation into a five-figure repair — and you might not find out for months.
What's actually under the car
On a Model 3 or Model Y, nearly the entire floor between the axles is the battery pack — a sealed aluminum enclosure holding the most expensive component on the vehicle. From below, the pack's edge seam looks like exactly the kind of sturdy flat lip you'd put a jack under on any other car. It isn't. It's not load-bearing, and it's inches from live cells.
Tesla gives you exactly four reinforced jack points — roughly a hand's width behind each front wheel and ahead of each rear wheel, marked by a round hole in the rocker area. Those four spots are the only place the car should ever take lifting load.
What goes wrong without pucks
A standard floor jack has a wide steel saddle. Even when it's aimed at the correct jack point, the edge of that saddle can contact the battery enclosure beside it as the suspension unloads and the geometry shifts. The result is a dent, crease, or crack in the enclosure.
Here's the part that should actually worry you: the damage is invisible from above. The car drives away fine. Weeks or months later you might see a battery error message, coolant weirdness, or unexplained range loss — and a service center inspection finds a deformed pack enclosure. Repairs range from a new enclosure cover to, in bad cases, pack replacement. That's a five-figure bill, and warranty coverage gets complicated when the cause is improper lifting.
A jack puck is a rubber or polyurethane adapter about the size of a hockey puck, with a nub that seats into the hole at each jack point. It raises the jack saddle so all load goes into the reinforced point and the saddle physically can't reach the pack. A set of four costs about $20 online and lives in the trunk. Every Tesla owner should own them — even if you never jack the car yourself, they're there for the tire shop that doesn't have EV adapters.
The other spec everyone skips: 129 ft-lbs
Tesla wheels torque to 129 ft-lbs (175 Nm), tightened in a star pattern with an actual torque wrench. The shop shortcut — running lug nuts down with an impact gun until it sounds right — is how studs get stretched, rotors get warped, and wheels come loose. On a 5,000-lb car with instant torque, this matters more, not less.
Whoever touches your wheels, watch for two things: pucks going in before the jack, and a torque wrench coming out at the end. If either is missing, say something. A good shop won't be offended.
If you DIY your rotations
- Pucks in all four jack points; single floor jack lifts one corner at a time, or use two jacks with stands rated for the car's weight — a Model Y is heavier than it looks.
- Cross-rotate: fronts go straight back, rears cross to the opposite front. Same-side front-to-back rotation (what Tesla's own mobile service does) works the tires less evenly.
- Torque to 129 ft-lbs in a star pattern, then re-check after 50 miles.
- Every 5,000–7,500 miles. EV weight and torque wear tires roughly 20% faster than a comparable gas car.
When it's something worse
If your car has already been lifted wrong — or you've had a hard curb strike or bottomed out on a driveway lip — and you're seeing battery warnings, coolant alerts, or a sudden range drop, that's not a maintenance problem. That's a Tesla service center inspection, and it should happen promptly. No mobile service, including ours, can properly inspect the inside of a battery pack. We'd rather tell you that than pretend otherwise.
